About
The Stories from My Grandmother’s Hands is a children’s book (ages 3-8) by Resmaa Menakem, T. Mychael Rambo, and illustrator Leroy Campbell, that presents the lessons of My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies in a format suitable for children; many of whom are experiencing personal and systemic racialized trauma.
This 3 hour workshop hosted by T. Mychael Rambo and Resmaa Menakem will delve into to how racialized stress impact children and their caregivers and how the somatic cultural technologies of blackness can be used to address the ravaging.
Teachers, administrators, caregivers are encouraged to participate in this innovative workshop.
T. Mychael is an accomplished residency artist and an affiliate professor in the College of Liberal Arts, Theatre Arts and Dance at the University of Minnesota. Resmaa Menakem is an African American author and psychotherapist specializing in the effects of trauma on the human body and the relationship between trauma, white body supremacy, and racism in America.
LEARN
In this course you will:
- Learn how to settle and resource the body before and during engaging with the book and reading it to children.
- Learn the five toys of Cultural Somatics to help Black- and brown-bodied children address different forms of racialized trauma.
- Temper the stress-activation response for white-bodied children and their caregivers.
- Understand the basics of racialized trauma and how it impacts caregivers and children.
- Understand how to use the album to engage and support children and caregivers’ systems.
